Bexley Snubs Fairtrade

You couldn’t have imagined it 10 years ago could you? I mean, the climate of ecological politics is getting so hot I think I’ll need to put on some factor 40 soon.
What with the Chancellor Alistair Darling’s budget introducing a tax of a whopping £950 on new cars bought that are the highest polluting… and many other aspects of his itinery that recognises our desperate need to change the way we’re living in order to save the world for future generations, it is of no doubt why Fairtrade’s sales continue to double every two years and have done for the last eight.
What is it about these post-modern parents that are trying to juggle eco-warrioring with liberal parenting? Well they’re certainly the people pushing the sales up… and indeed Fairtrade is becoming more accessible, with an increasing product range (which I’ll explore later)… but what about when people aren’t so accepting to these ‘radical’ initiatives?
Shouldn’t they be demonised?
I refer to the London Borough of Bexley, whose Council leader it has emerged has rebuffed any calls for the constituent to become ‘Fairtrade friendly’.
According to the Bexley Times, Labour parliamentary candidate for Bexleyheath and Crayford Howard Dawber, has called on its council to try to become a Fairtrade town.
However Council leader Ian Clement said: “Whilst we all want to see a fairer world, Mr Dawber’s time would be better spent at the moment lobbying the government, that he supports, for a better grant settlement considering Bexley is being disadvantaged at the expense on those up north, something which affects us all.”
Apparently Bexley already have a Fairtrade steering group so I wonder what they’d think about this recent development?? I’ve tried ringing but got no answer, will try again soon!
