I don’t know about you, but though right now I 100% endorse Fairtrade and everything it stands for… I still don’t think it holds near enough prominence in every day shopping as it should.
Fairtrade Fortnight 2008 was deeply highlighted in the Press, but not just the press - I’m sure everybody saw something about it at their work, uni, hobby base or even local cafe etc…
So yeah, we’ve all heard of Fairtrade. And yeah, we all know what it stands for.. but when you go shopping, you just don’t see the products jumping out at you do you??
As far as I’m concerned, there isn’t enough variety on sale!…
And that’s why I was pleased to hear that the International Development Secretary have recently announced an investment of £1.2million to the Fairtrade Organisation to help double the market by increasing the amount of farmers and producers they use in countries around the world to give more and more people a fairer price for their goods.
This is perfect. Perhaps now we can extend the Fairtrade line, but not just that, use the money to increase the amount of shops here in the UK that will source their goods from ethically viable places so that we don’t have to go to ’specialist’ shops to find good quality, Fairly-traded food!
